☀️'Straw' Gives NETFLIX Its Biggest '25 Movie WeekJune movie buying spree continues / PAR, UNI splitting ‘Meet the Parents’ / NETFLIX’s big French TV move
Mornin! This is Sean McNulty (connect with me on LINKEDIN here if ya like or email me at seanmcnultynyc@gmail.com), and here’s the Hollywood + Media news to know on Wednesday, June 18, 2025. Where I’m pretty sure Zuck’s new $14.4B AI purchase still isn’t going to keep your META AI queries about why farts smell differently, tax evasion or how to meet “big booty women” just between the “two” of you. Yes, it seems the bastion of user privacy that is META CORP has a little privacy problem with its META AI app . . .whereby you have an option of easily hitting a “share” button with your inquiries — which then brings you to a screen with a preview of the post, which you can then publish. And apparently a lotta people are not quite aware of this function . . . nor that it also allows folks like, oh, say, Tech Crunch reporters to easily see whatever you “privately” asked AI to answer for you. Some weeks it’s a real shame when SNL is in the off-season, but it's always nice to see META keeping it real. YEAH: That time Joe Biden did an impromptu swing by the Reacher set in Philly. KUDOS: To Florida for beating Canada again in ice hockey. The Sunshine State has had a team in the Stanley Cup in each of the past 6 years. Canada hasn’t won a Stanley Cup in 33 years. YUP: The TIKTOK ban is going to be extended again, and . . . honestly, I’m not going to write about this again until something materially changes. AND: This is just a fun story about how a 29-year-old U.S. Marine Corps officer won a house in Western Ireland in a real estate sale lottery. Could be a fun movie in here somewhere. Definitely a NETFLIX rom-com at minimum. PLUS: FOX NEWS got 4.9M viewers on Saturday evening for the HMM: JETBLUE will cut flights and costs due to weaker travel demand/consumer spending seen in Q2. 👀 YUP: Elon is spending $1B a month on Grok/xAI, which should all make us feel a little bit better about streaming spending from 2018-2022 #RIP. OH: If you’re wondering what Daniel Ek is doing with the hundreds of millions of SPOTIFY stock he’s sold over the past 18 months — he’s leading a new $690M investment round in an EU AI defense & drone company. Sorry, music biz — but thanks for the dough! SO: If you have a CHASE SAPPHIRE card — your annual fee is going up by 45%. You see, JP MORGAN CHASE only made $14.6B of net profit in Q1, and we simply can’t have that.
THEN: The Senate confirmed Trump’s Republican FCC appointee Olivia Trustee, giving the Republicans a current 2-1 majority on the commission. The vote was 53-45 Republicans/Democrats. AH: Trumponomics in graph form. Plus — eh, who needs Medicaid anyway, amirite? Can’t you people just afford your own private doctors like the rest of us? THANKS! To the folks at SONY for the invite to check out 28 Years Later last night — although the heads up to bring a Xanax woulda been nice. I’d tell you what I thought of it, but there is an embargo until this afternoon so . . . uh, I guess email me if you want? 🤷♂️ 🎥 THE SILVER SCREENTHE BUYING MARKET: ‘DO ANOTHER ONE!’ EDITION...Subscribe to The Ankler. to unlock the rest.Become a paying subscriber of The Ankler. to get access to this post and other subscriber-only content.
