President Trump, redux
Donald J Trump took over on Monday as the 47th President of the United States, promising a return to a “golden age” and a “revolution of common sense”, pledging that “America First” would be his guiding philosophy, declaring the end of the country’s decline, claiming that God saved his life to let him “make America great again”, and proclaiming that his greatest legacy will be that of a “peacemaker and unifier”.
Trump also gave a sense of the executive orders he intended to sign later in the day, vowing to declare a national emergency on the southern border, a national energy emergency with the intention to “drill baby, drill”, sweeping directions on gender and race, and the creation of an external revenue service to collect trade tariffs from other countries. U’khand nod for UCC rules: Will other states implement too?
The Uttarakhand cabinet on Monday approved the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) manual that comprised rules for the administration and courts to implement the controversial legislation, with chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami saying preparations for enforcing UCC were almost complete.
The rules will come into force once they are notified later this month on a day to be announced by Dhami. “The training process for the UCC implementation is almost complete. During the cabinet meeting, we discussed implementing it as soon as possible. After reviewing everything, we will soon announce its implementation date,” the chief minister said after the cabinet meeting. Read more.

Engaging with President Trump
As Donald Trump begins his second term as the president of the United States (US), there is little to suggest a shift away from the fundamentals that have driven strategic alignment between the US and India over the past two decades, especially in key areas such as security and defence, strategic concerns such as the challenge posed by China and recent initiatives to jointly develop and set standards for critical technologies. For much of this period, bipartisan consensus in the US on the importance of the partnership with India has deepened, benefiting New Delhi in numerous domains.
This is reflected in the outgoing Joe Biden administration’s decision to end restrictions on key Indian nuclear entities and the Trump transition team’s move to set up a meeting of the Quad foreign ministers to coincide with the inauguration. In a sense, therefore, work on crucial pillars of the India-US relationship is expected to continue uninterrupted and this is something that Indian leaders such as external affairs minister S Jaishankar have been quick to point out in recent weeks, ahead of Trump’s inauguration.
