IN CASE YOU MISSED ITFrom Wednesday’s edition of Wide World of News Concierge Coverage daily newsletter (To subscribe and become a member, click here): ANNOUNCER: From the Nation’s Capital, the McLaughlin Group….an unrehearsed program presenting inside opinions and forecasts on major issues of the day….sponsored in part by Edison Electric Institute…the association of electric companies…and by Northrop Corporation…Northrop, making advanced technology work…. Here’s the moderator, John McLaughlin, Washington executive editor of the National Review. MR. MCLAUGHLIN: Issue One – Philly filet. MR. MCLAUGHLIN ON TAPE: Item: In what might be their only debate, Vice President Kamala Harris and former president Donald Trump faced off in the City of Brotherly Love. Item: Mrs. Harris had her moments, like on abortion, but was mostly blah while Trump showed the discipline of Germond scarfing down a double cheeseburger during a late lunch after missing breakfast because he overslept after a night out drinking. Which is to say – Trump showed very little discipline. Item: But the big story of the night was the ABC News moderators, whose boss is Kamala Harris’ best friend, and who made Joy Reid look like Tucker Carlson. So…, I ask you, Pat Buchanan – MR. BUCHANAN, SYNDICATED COLUMNIST: John, for a guy who is usually lights out by 8pm and doesn’t own a VCR, you seem to have watched quite a bit of this debate. ALL: (LAUGHTER) MR. BUCHANAN: Seriously, John, Trump was as bad as I’ve seen him. The chap was more easily thrown off track than a North Korea sub during a light summer rain shower. The first one hundred names in the Chevy Chase white pages would have given better answers than old Trump did. He never held Comrade Harris accountable for her horrible record. What a disaster. MR. MCLAUGHLIN: Eleanor???!!! ELEANOR CLIFT, NEWSWEEK: Where do I begin, John? I actually think this debate was worse for Trump than most of the instant reviews I’ve seen. Cats and dogs and Haitian immigrants? Wouldn’t say he wants Ukraine to beat Putin? His health care plan is a quote “concept of a plan.” He even defended January 6 and said the 2020 election was rigged. Not even the most optimistic debate preppers on Team Harris could have imagined he would do that! Sure, the moderators were tough on Trump. Because he lied spectacularly and repeatedly and comprehensively. And they gave him, time and again, a chance to respond when Harris eviscerated him. Which he didn’t do very effectively. He was angry, and then more angry, and then incomprehensibly angry. Trump just lied all night during the debate. But the biggest lie he told was in the spin room afterwards, when he said it was his best debate ever. It was his worst. MR. MCLAUGHLIN: Are you sure about that, Eleanora? ELEANOR CLIFT, NEWSWEEK: So sure that I bet Bob agrees with me. And her abortion response was one for the ages. And Trump was horrible on that, too. MR. MCLAUGHLIN: Robert Novak, what say you? MR. NOVAK, CHICAGO SUN-TIMES: I have to say I have not seen a fight this unfair since John Dingell cross examined some environmental extremists who testified before his committee that Detroit needed to build smaller cars to save the planet. But I’m not talking about Harris versus Trump. I’m talking about the totally unfairness of ABC News. The Wall Street Journal claims quote she was “also pressed by the moderators on the many issues she has reversed positions on since her unsuccessful campaign for the 2020 Democratic nomination.” There was no such pressing. The media accounts of the debate in the so-called mainstream media don’t mention how one-sided this was. The New York Times, like ABC News part of the anti-Trump Resistance, actually said the moderators, this Muir fellow and some lady named “Davis,” used quote “calm and authoritative tones,” to quote “offer a model for real-time fact-checking.” That wasn’t a new model, John, that was the same old bias, but on a very big stage. Of course, Trump didn’t much help himself. He failed to use a pre-debate memo from Jude Wanniski, calling for lowering the capital gains tax rate to zero, so he got what he deserved, really. MR. MCLAUGHLIN: Quickly, quickly, sweet Jack-o-child of mine?? JACK GERMOND, BALTIMORE SUN: I’ve covered a lot of politicians with big egos. That’s what makes a lot of them go into this racket. I’ve never seen a more fragile ego on display than on that debate stage. I’m tempted to say that the Harris operation consulted a team of psychologists to figure out which of Trump’s buttons to push and how to push them, but it probably wasn’t necessary. Trump was terrible. No question about it. He was also ineffective. He never laid a glove on her. He was phenomenally incompetent, never pushing Harris on losing Democratic issues like racial preferences or—despite one near-incomprehensible attempt—sex change operations. The guy has more triggers than the old “Shooting Range Afternoon” event at those NRA retreats. There is no possible way her debate prep sessions could have gone like that, because who would have thought that an adult man who has run the free world and has participated in more presidential debates than anyone in the history of the Republic would be so comically easy to bait, goad, and lure down the exact paths she pointed him towards? That man shouldn’t be trying to get back to the Oval Office. He should be seeking intensive mental health care. MR. MCLAUGHLIN: Exit question, on a scale of 0 to 10…with 0 meaning zero probability and 10 meaning metaphysical certitude…. How confident are you that Harris’ total takedown of Trump will give her a bump up in the polls – and by how much? MR. BUCHANAN: As bad as Trump was overall, there was no single gladiatorial moment of weakness, so swing voters actually won’t even know this happened. She goes up within the margin of error briefly and the race is back to even by the end of the month. And Trump’s edge on cultural issues means, even after last night, he is still the favorite in Pennsylvania. MS. CLIFT: Oh, it’s a ten she goes up in the polls. She will be ahead just outside the margin of error in enough states to win the election and she will keep small but persistent leads the rest of the way. This thing isn’t over quite yet, but advantage Harris for sure. MR. MCLAUGHLIN: Robert?? MR. NOVAK (SMILING BUT NOT CLEARLY UNHAPPY): I haven’t been this pained since the Bullets drafted Kenny Green over Karl Malone, but Eleanor is right. MR. GERMOND: As bad as Trump was, I’m not sure she closed the sale with too many battleground state double haters in this thing. The New York Times early soundings found that a lot of undecided voters still don’t really know what she will do as president. Did white, Black, and Hispanic men without college degrees and making less than $40,000 a year hear a lot from her that gets them onboard? I doubt it. MR. MCLAUGHLIN: WRONG!!! The answer is, in the words of the New York Times, she displayed a composure and tactical restraint that was palpable through the television screen. Poetry! Maya Rudolph, clear your schedule. You’ve got a four-year gig lined up.…….We’ll be right back with predictions. **** MR. MCLAUGHLIN: Predictions. Pat? MR. BUCHANAN: Trump is going to try some big gambit this week to change the narrative away from his horrible performance. I can’t predict what it will be yet, but I can predict that both the media and the Harris campaign will laugh at him and call him desperate. And I will make a second prediction: This mockery will upset Trump even more. MR. MCLAUGHLIN: Ellie belly? MS. CLIFT: John, that Beyonce-Taylor Swift concert that was rumored for the convention in Chicago? Look for it to happen in Philadelphia in October. Talk about triggering Trump! MR. MCLAUGHLIN: Roberto? MR. NOVAK: Trump’s top aide, Corey Lewandowski, will use Trump’s debate debacle to finally make his move to push out his top rival in the campaign. The Wednesday and Thursday negative reviews of his performance will make Trump mental. The candidate can’t fire himself and he won’t take responsibility, so this should be interesting. MR. MCLAUGHLIN: Jack? MR. GERMOND: The Harris campaign has now basically committed to another debate. Trump has to try again. Get ready for another tedious debate-about-debates, but we will get another one of these. Trump will have his mulligan but Harris will come in even more confident than she did last night. MR. MCLAUGHLIN: After that debate, Harris is about to raise even more in September than she raised in August. Trump’s worst nightmare is about to come true – he will have way less money than the Black lady. I mean, the lady of color. MR. MCLAUGHLIN: Bye-bye!!! |
