Can Vietnam keep its net-zero promise while jailing climate activists?

While Group of Seven nations have pledged $15.5 billion for a Just Energy Transition Partnership with Vietnam, Tran Phuong Thao argues that it cannot really be "just" when Hanoi is silencing, jailing and torturing environmental defenders.   Thao is the wife of environmental lawyer Dang Dinh Bach, one of many environmental defenders who are languishing in prison. These people "helped steer Vietnam toward committing to net-zero emissions by 2050," she argues.   Thao was disappointed that U.S. President Joe Biden only briefly touched on human rights abuses during his mid-September visit to Vietnam.
