Thank you for your support. Mark **** One of the laziest shortcuts to writing a daily news tip sheet is to put out a list of questions to which the writer does not know the answer. I try to avoid this trick. You pay me to answer questions, not ask them. Today, I am suspending my usual practice, in part because the most compelling political aspect of the Schumer-Manchin reconciliation deal is how many extraordinarily key pending mysteries are truly unsolved at this writing. I just read about 30 articles and too many tweets to count about the deal, and I can tell you that the best minds in the Capitol Hill and White House press corps and in the cesspool known as Twitter do not seem to have answers for these mammoth matters: 1. What’s actually going to be in both the main bill and the sidebar energy permitting legislation that was key to getting the deal done? (Here is a version of the chief package, but surely it is going to change – and how will the parliamentarian rule on the various provisions?) 2. Can the Senate really get this voted on next week, given that the world’s most deliberative body always likes to deliberate? 3. With 49 Democratic Senate votes seemingly in the bag(ish), will Arizona Senator Sinema be on board for a package that is loaded with tax increases? 4. What will the timing be on voting on the permitting bill and what will Republicans in the House and Senate do on that? 5. Did Schumer and Manchin time the announcement of the deal until after the passage of the Chips and Science legislation in the Senate – and, if so, did they purposefully just roll Washington’s ostensibly Unrollable Man, Mitch McConnell – and, if so, what is McConnell going to do about it? Related: Will House Republicans now withdraw their support from the Chips and Science bill – and, if so, can Speaker Pelosi find more Democratic votes to salvage it? 6. With so many corporate and individual rich people sacred cows suddenly imperiled, what will the Gucci-and-Lululemon-wearing lobbyists do? 7. With a narrow margin of error in the House, what will Democrats there who have claimed they will vote for no tax package without a fundamental change in state and local tax deductibility do now? 8. Will House liberals make the perfect the enemy of the Manchin-blessed on the main package? 9. If the bill passes, what will the impact be on the midterms and voters’ perceptions of Team Biden-Harris-Klain-Pelosi-Schumer? 10. How effective will Republican attacks on the main package be, given that it includes the doubling the size of the IRS (sensible but/and a longstanding boogeyman) and raising taxes (only on the wealthy and corporations, but/and Republicans have made those arguments stick in the past). **** Don’t believe me that none of these supremely vital questions are answerable at this hour?
