The flood situation in Assam continued to remain grim as seven more lives were lost to the deluge on Thursday taking the toll to 108. The total population affected by the current wave of flood, however, registered a decline to 45.34 lakh in 30 districts from Wednesday's 54.50 lakh in 32 districts, according to a bulletin shared by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).

Three days on, Silchar remains flooded, cut off

Assam's Silchar area remained inundated and cut off for the third day as the death toll in the state hit by floods rose to 108 since April, with seven more people drowning on Thursday, officials said.

Thirty of the state's 35 districts were affected with over 4.5 million people suffering in the aftermath of flooding and 284,875 displaced from their homes, taking shelter in 1,395 relief camps, according to official figures.

The situation remained particularly grim in Silchar in Assam's Barak valley, where officials said nearly the entire city was "submerged under water". Read more.

Dr Mookerjee's body brought to Calcutta

MORE than 200,000 people paid their last homage to Dr S. P. Mookerjee whose body was brought to Calcutta from Srinagar by air tonight. The Jan Sangh leader died early this morning in the Srinagar State Hospital where he had been taken yesterday for treatment of pleurisy.

Vast crowds lined the 13-mile route from Dum Dum airport to Dr Mookerjee's ancestral residence in South Calcutta. Read more.
