Senate GOP blocks domestic terrorism bill, gun policy debate
Senate GOP blocks domestic terrorism bill, gun policy debate
Thursday 5/26 at 11:42am

Democrats' first attempt at responding to the back-to-back mass shootings in Buffalo and Uvalde, Texas, has failed in the Senate. Republicans on Thursday blocked debate on a domestic terrorism bill that would have opened debate on domestic terrorism, hate crimes and gun policy. The final vote was 47-47, short of the 60 needed to take up the bill. Sen. Susan Collins of Maine was the only Republican to vote yes. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer says he will give bipartisan negotiations in the Senate about two weeks while Congress is away for a break — to try to forge a compromise bill that could pass the Senate.

Law enforcement authorities in Texas are facing questions and criticism over how much time elapsed before they stormed an Uvalde elementary school classroom and put a stop to the rampage by a gunman who killed 19 children and two teachers. Investigators are also unable to say with any certainty whether an armed school district security officer outside Robb Elementary exchanged fire with the gunman, 18-year-old Salvador Ramos, when he first arrived on Tuesday.

Wisconsin GOP leader isn't ruling anyone out for key slot
Thursday 5/26 at 11:19am

Wisconsin's Republican Assembly leader, who will appoint a key member of the state's bipartisan elections commission, says he is not "ruling anybody in or out" as he looks to quickly fill a vacancy in the battleground state before the next chair of the panel is chosen. Assembly Speaker Robin Vos told The Associated Press on Thursday that he intended to appoint someone before the commission's meeting in two weeks where a new chair will be selected. The commission delayed a vote Wednesday after Vos's current appointee abruptly announced he was resigning under pressure from Republicans who are angry because he believes Donald Trump lost to Joe Biden fair and square.

Cost of building power transmission line growing
Thursday 5/26 at 10:48am
Rising material prices and legal expenses are expected to add nearly $50 million more to the cost of a power transmission line being built across southern Wisconsin. American Transmission Co., ITC Midwest and Dairyland Power Cooperative are building the 345-kilovolt Cardinal-Hickory Creek transmission line that would run more than 100 miles from Dane County to Dubuque County in Iowa. The utilities have notified the Wisconsin Public Service Commission that the overall cost of the project is now expected to top more than half a billion dollars. In the filing, the utilities cited considerable increases in the cost of steel, conductors, insulators and other materials.
